Four months into the COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria, the country is in no doubt at the early stage of the pandemic. However, as Nigeria moves into more advanced stages, fixing healthcare is a crucial step to combat COVID-19.
Beyond immediate and active health measures of social distancing, wearing of face masks, ban on public gatherings and lockdown restrictions to limit transmission and minimize harm from COVID-19, the government should consider implementing reforms to rebuild our fragile healthcare system that may be overwhelmed at the peak of the pandemic in Nigeria.
Prior to COVID-19, healthcare institutions were already overburdened with many ailments given poor medical supplies, shortage of health workers and poor infrastructure.
To effectively fight COVID-19, the federal and state governments should consider reducing the cost of governance to free up more money for health at this critical point. The healthcare sector must be supported through adequate funding, incentives for health workers, and health care subsidies for the most vulnerable people.
