Citizens Health Initiative Nigeria (CHIN) today conducted a training program for selected community navigators drawn from different areas across Lagos, focusing on strengthening essential public health knowledge and community-level response skills.
The training focused on a multi-sectoral approach to public health, equipping participants with practical skills in behavioral change communication, malaria control, infectious disease prevention and control, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) behavior change, nutrition education, and structured data collection methods for community reporting.
According to program leads, the initiative is designed to build a stronger bridge between households and formal healthcare systems by empowering community navigators to identify health risks early, support referrals, and promote healthier practices at household level. Special emphasis was placed on malaria prevention strategies and infectious disease control, given their continued impact in densely populated communities.
Participants also received hands-on guidance on standardized data collection processes to ensure consistency, accuracy, and timely reporting from the field. This component is expected to enhance evidence-based decision-making and improve the efficiency of public health interventions.
Key sessions on malaria and infectious disease control emphasized prevention strategies, early recognition of symptoms, and community sensitization approaches aimed at reducing transmission risks. The WASH module addressed safe hygiene practices, sanitation improvement, and access to clean water behaviors, while the nutrition segment focused on essential dietary education and preventing malnutrition among vulnerable populations, particularly children and pregnant women.
CHIN noted that strengthening community navigation systems is essential for improving health outcomes, especially in underserved areas where access to formal healthcare services may be limited. Trained navigators will serve as frontline actors supporting awareness, linkage to care, and community-level health surveillance.
