Citizens Health Initiative (CHIN) Nigeria has successfully conducted its "Community Care Connection" outreach beneath the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, delivering essential healthcare services to the vulnerable homeless population living around the area. The initiative marked a significant step toward addressing the healthcare challenges faced by individuals who are often overlooked within the formal healthcare system.

In a bustling city like Lagos, many members of the homeless community face significant barriers to accessing medical care, including financial hardship, social discrimination in healthcare facilities, and the absence of official identification documents. These obstacles frequently prevent them from receiving even the most basic health services.

To bridge this gap, the Community Care Connection outreach brought healthcare directly to those in need. The initiative provided comprehensive medical support, including blood pressure and glucose screenings to help identify chronic health conditions at an early stage. Medical volunteers also offered wound care and first aid services for untreated injuries commonly experienced by people living in precarious conditions. In addition, certified counselors provided mental health support, offering emotional and psychological assistance to beneficiaries.

Speaking during the outreach, Mrs. Godfrey-Oduh, Director of Program and Outreach at CHIN Nigeria, emphasized the organization’s commitment to inclusive healthcare. “Quality healthcare should be accessible to all, regardless of their social or economic standing. By coming to the National Stadium area, we are reaching people who often feel forgotten by society,” she said.

Recognizing that overall well-being extends beyond medical treatment, the outreach also distributed hygiene kits containing essential items such as soap, toothpaste, and sanitary towels. Hot meals were provided to beneficiaries, ensuring that participants received both nourishment and care, contributing to their physical and emotional well-being.

The event brought a sense of relief and hope to many individuals living around the stadium. One beneficiary, identified as Ade, who has lived near the stadium for the past three years, expressed his appreciation for the initiative. “Usually, people just walk past us or tell us to move. Today, they actually listened to where I was hurting and gave me medicine. I feel like a human being again,” he said. His testimony underscored the importance of not only providing healthcare services but also restoring dignity and human connection to those who are often marginalized.

While the one-day outreach provided immediate support to hundreds of beneficiaries, Citizens Health Initiative Nigeria emphasized that the effort represents only the beginning of a broader mission to advance health equity across the country. The organization remains committed to ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to quality healthcare and believes that sustained interventions are essential to creating a healthier and more inclusive society.

CHIN Nigeria continues to encourage public participation in its efforts through volunteering, donations, and advocacy. The organization welcomes health professionals and community volunteers to support future Community Care Connection outreaches. Financial contributions help fund the purchase of medications, hygiene supplies, and diagnostic equipment, while advocacy efforts play a critical role in raising awareness about the healthcare rights of homeless individuals and reducing the stigma that often prevents them from seeking care.
