Citizens Health Initiative Nigeria (CHIN) unequivocally identifies with Nigerian citizens exercising their civic right to peaceful protest against police brutality. We unreservedly condemn the attack on peaceful, unarmed protesters in any part of Nigeria.
Our Position
Police brutality is a societal menace. It violates the fundamental right to life, undermines the right to health, and inflicts deep psychological harm on individuals, families, and communities. The courage of Nigerians who have taken to the streets to demand an end to this pattern of violence is not only justified, it is commendable.
CHIN recognizes police brutality as a public health crisis. The fear, trauma, and physical harm inflicted on citizens by those sworn to protect them has consequences that extend far beyond the moment of violence. Communities that live under the threat of brutality cannot thrive. People who fear those meant to protect them cannot be well.
Our Call to the Federal Government
We call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to resist any temptation to escalate an already tense situation. The voices on the streets are clear. The demands are legitimate. We urge the government to expedite concrete action to meet the demands of protesters and begin the meaningful reform of security institutions that Nigerians deserve.
Statement from Citizens Health Initiative Nigeria
"As an organization committed to the right to health and human dignity, we cannot be silent. Health does not exist apart from safety, justice, and freedom. What is happening on the streets of Nigeria is a public health issue, and we stand firmly on the side of the people." — May Ubeku, Executive Director, Citizens Health Initiative Nigeria
