The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported that 172 people have died from Lassa fever nationwide so far in 2025, as confirmed infections continue to spread across the country.

In its latest situation report released on Tuesday, the agency disclosed that 924 confirmed cases had been recorded as of epidemiological week 40. The infections were reported across 21 states and 106 Local Government Areas (LGAs).

According to the NCDC, the case fatality rate (CFR) has risen to 18.6 per cent, compared with 17 per cent recorded during the same period in 2024, indicating a higher proportion of deaths among confirmed cases this year.

The agency said five states accounted for 90 per cent of all confirmed infections. Ondo State recorded the highest share with 35 per cent of cases, followed by Bauchi (22 per cent), Edo (17 per cent), Taraba (13 per cent), and Ebonyi (3 per cent). The remaining 10 per cent of cases were distributed across 16 other states.

The report also noted a sharp increase in new infections during the latest reporting week. Confirmed cases rose from four in epidemiological week 39 to 13 in week 40, with all new cases recorded in Ondo State.

The NCDC stated that people aged between 21 and 30 years remain the most affected demographic group. It added that the male-to-female ratio among confirmed cases stands at 1:0.8.

No new infections among healthcare workers were reported during the week under review, according to the agency.
